Description

For grade levels 5-8

Tiles make great & quick projects for students with little time and money to spend working with clay. In this lesson, students can make their own square tiles out of a slab of clay or to speed things up a bit, teachers may purchase bisque fired tiles to jump right to glazing and surface decoration. This lesson can be connected to nlearning about botany (the study of plants) with a focus on texture and relief sculpting (seen here with the use of Sculpting Medium).

Instructions 

Glazing Directions:
  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Apply the ½’ Masking Tape to the edge of the tile creating a border.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of FN-043 Bright Jade to the area inside the tape. Allow to dry.
  4. Spray the back of the stencil with stencil adhesive, press to the DRY glaze.
  5. With a Rubber Squeegee apply the SG-501 Sculpting Medium to the stencil. Remove the stencil almost immediately, pulling straight up.
  6. Remove the tape.
  7. Pour some SG-501 Sculpting Medium into the AC-223 Large Writer Tip bottle, use the large metal tip and very quickly make small loops on the un-glazed border. Allow to dry.
  8. Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 2-3 coats of FN-227 Celery to the border. Allow to dry.
  9. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06/05.
