"Art in a Jar"! Our crystal glazes make learning so much fun. This lesson, students will learn about the ceramic process of glazing. Using a crystal glaze helps the students visually understand that glaze is composed of glass particles that melt during firing, creating a protective glass-like surface. The larger crystals in the glaze bloom and pool because these areas have thicker glaze. Our sample is of a giraffe, but please feel free to adapt this lesson to other animals as well, changing your crystal glaze accordingly: For example, if your students want to paint reptiles instead, use CG-717 Pistachio or CG-973 Alligator.

Glazing Directions:

1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
2. Cut out the head of the giraffe pattern, loosely trace on the tile.
3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of SC-54 Vanilla Dip, brush over the trace line.
4. Brush some water over the glaze then set in the paper giraffe head. Press down with a paper towel.
5. Sponge off the excess glaze around the paper, carefully.
6. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 4 coats of FN-303 Deep Blue Sea to the top of the tile. Remove the paper.
7. Using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper, trace on the detail of the head with the second pattern.
8. Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 1 coat of CG-793 Beech Pebbles with crystals to the spots.
9. Using a CB-106 #6 Script Liner, apply 1 coat of SC-25 Crackerjack Brown to the spots, ear, muzzle, mane and antlers.
10. Apply a second coat of SC-25 Crackerjack Brown, shade the spots with SC-14 Java Bean in the bush on the top of the spots and SC-34 Down to Earth for the lower edge of the spots.
11. Shade the mane, ears, antlers, and muzzle with the same colors, with the second coat of SC-25 Crackerjack Brown.
12. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, accent the spots and all the parts with SC-15 Tuxedo.
13. Apply 1 coat of SC-16 Cotton Tail to the eye area, pupil is SC-15 Tuxedo, outline.
