Objectives

• Students will learn the steps of creating with clay including construction, bisque firing, glazing, and glaze firing

Butterfly Tile:

1. Place your clay on a canvas fabric with ¼" wooden slats on the left and right side of the fabric. Using the 1" dowel or rolling pin, roll out the clay. The smaller dowels are used as a guide to keep your clay level. Make sure the edges of the rolling pin hits the dowels.
2. Take a small marble size piece of clay and place it in the individual portion cup and add about 3 tablespoons of water. Mix this up with your fingers to make the slurry. This will be your "Glue" to attach all the pieces together.

3. Lightly mark the clay tile in a 4” or 6” square. Using the ST -343 Deco Circles Designer Stamp, press the stamp pattern onto the clay.

4. Using a fettling knife cut out a 4” or 6” square tile in the stamped clay.
5. Using the CD1257 Beaded & Braid Trim roll a design of choice onto the clay in a long strip. Cut the clay into four 4” strips. Score and slip onto the clay tile, making a frame around the tile. Smooth the side edges.
6. Press a large enough flat piece of clay into the CD 1261 Sprig mold butterfly of choice to fill the design. Eliminate excess clay so the clay sits even with the mold. Make a small ball of clay and press into the top of the molded clay to release the piece. Score and slip to tile. Color to Butterfly tile
7. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply a wash of SC-15 Tuxedo over the entire tile so it falls into all the detail areas as an antiquing.
8. Lightly take a flat dry paper towel or soft napkin and press light to eliminate excess SC-15 Tuxedo, taking care not to move the design. Do not use water.
9. Using the CB-106 #6 Script Liner and CB-110 #10/0 Liner apply 2 coats of the Stroke & Coat colors of choice to the design.
10. Wipe off any excess glaze on the bottom of the piece.
11. Fire to shelf cone 06. Note: If there are unglazed areas apply 1 coat of S-2101 Crystal Clear to the front and sides of the tile making sure the bottom is free of all glazes.

Fish Tile:

6. Using a press design from CD1078 stamp into the strips to create a pattern. Score and slip onto the clay tile, making a frame around the tile.
7. Press a large enough piece of clay into the CD 916 Sprig mold fish of choice to fill the design. Eliminate excess clay so the clay sits even with the mold. Make a small ball of clay and press into the top of the molded clay to release the piece. Score and slip to tile. Note: Choose from any of Mayco’s designer stamps, press tools or sprig molds to create you own personal tile! Color to Fish Tile
8. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply a wash of SC-76 Cara-Bein Blue over the entire tile so it falls into all the detail areas as an antiquing.
9. Lightly take a flat dry paper towel or soft napkin and press light to eliminate excess SC-76 Cara-Bein Blue, taking care not to move the design. Do not use water.
10. Using the CB-106 #6 Script Liner blend in SC—Blue Yonder over the tile for highlights.
11. Using the CB-106 #6 Script Liner and CB-110 #10/0 Liner apply 2 coats of the Stroke & Coat colors of choice to the design.
12. Wipe off any excess glaze on the bottom of the piece.
13. Fire to shelf cone 06. Note:  If there are unglazed areas apply 1 coat of S-2101 Crystal Clear to the front and sides of the tile making sure the bottom is free of all glazes.
