With the breeze of fall in full swing, a fresh new presence has arrived at Ohio Ceramic Supply. When Mayco Colors acquired OCS back in April, immediate plans were made to add a studio area with a full education program and expand the product assortment in the store. Therefore, a Grand Re-Opening was sure to be a grand, art-filled occasion.
We would like to thank our visiting artists, familiar faces and new friends, as well as our vendors and suppliers for making our event so grand. The weekend event was filled with artist workshops ranging from Michael Harbridge’s unique Raku firing and fun Clay Critter workshops, William Pulse’s truly creative and brush-worthy home décor ceramics to David Hoff’s lovely, color-focused illustrations.
Ceramic artists Fong Choo and Janis Mars Wunderlich were our featured presenters. During their workshops, attendees received a front-row seat to each artists’ unique creation process. Inspiration from her family helps Janis create sculptures to encompass her children’s energy and the many lessons she has learned along the way. Janis uses Mayco Underglazes in a painterly fashion during her building process to enhance the figures and dimension. Meanwhile, Fong marveled us with his ease of throwing on the wheel and presented a large variety of his own Mayco crystal glaze tests which he utilizes on his unique and descriptive teapots.
In addition to enjoying workshops and artists’ presentations, attendees also joined the fun with our wonderful vendors and suppliers to test new products and explore new techniques – all while shopping the great sales at Ohio Ceramic Supply. The owner and creator of Xiem Tools, Kevin Xiem Nguyen was in attendance and demonstrated the versatility of his wonderful high-quality tools .Representatives from Amaco, Duncan, Laguna Clay, Mayco, Shimpo, Skutt, Spectrum, Standard Clay and Olympic Decals were on hand to answer questions and discuss their latest and greatest products. We are so appreciative of their support.
On the final day in the new OCS studio space, “The Mudroom”, we held a Bowl Throwing Contest. Teams of students, teachers and artists from nearby universities and clay organizations took part in the challenge to throw as many bowls as possible in 2, 1-hour sessions. They threw an amazing 451 bowls! The bowls will be fired and OCS will work with local elementary, middle and high schools to glaze them for an Empty Bowls project later this fall.
We are already looking forward to future workshops and events at OCS. Please visit us soon to see the new studio, sign up for future events or shop our expanded product lines.
