Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Place some S-2101 Crystal Clear into a small cup and add a little bit of water to slightly dilute it (about 3 parts glaze and 1 part water). It should be the consistency of a coffee cream. Pour this into the vase and roll around to completely coat the interior of the vase. Drain out the excess glaze and keep the vase inverted until it has lost its shine. Wipe off any glaze from the outside using a damp sponge. Allow to dry.
  3. Using CB-604 Soft Fan, apply 3-4 even and smooth coats of FN-301 Ivory Cream to the front and back panels of the vase. Try not to get the color up on the edge onto the rim. Let dry.
  4. Using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon paper, transfer the design onto the flat panel of the vase. Trace over the lines on the vase delineating the sctions in the bird with a Fine Sharpie Marker.
  5. Place all Stroke & Coat colors onto a tile or pallet. Use the Sharpie Maker to denote the color number on the tile or pallet for ease of use while painting. When painting, some of the colors are thinned to a very dirty water consistency. It is always easier to apply a second or third coat of thinned color to darken or add more dimenions. Each coat of thinned color will show.
  6. Thin SC-16 Cotton Tail to milk consistency and apply one even flooded coat to the bird using CB-404 Pointed Round. The color should be thin enough to see the underlying section lines of the bird. When the color is dry, the lines should be faint enough to see though the white.
  7. Starting with the beak, apply thinned SC-5 Tiger tail with CB-110 Liner. Shade with thinned SC-25 Crackerjack Brown. Outline the top of the beak with SC-25. Outline the beak separations and bottom edge with thinned SC-14 Java Bean. Darken slightly next to the birds face with thinned SC-15 Tuxedo.
  8. Paint in the iris of the eye with thinned SC-25 Crackerjack Brown. Paint in the pupil of the eye with SC-15 Tuxedo. Apply a dot of SC-16 Cotton Tail to highlight.
  9. Fo the "eye mask" of the bird, apply 1 coat of SC-13 Grapel with CB-404 Pointed Round. Apply a line of SC-33 Fruit of the Vine to outline the bottom edge of the eye mask. To the top of the eye mask, apply a fine line of SC-11 Blue Yonder from the beak over the eye and just past the eye.
  10. Apply a wash of SC-51 Poo Bear to the crown of the head continuing along the back of the head, and down over the wing to cover about 2/3 of the wing using CB-404 Pointed Round.
  11. Apply some color from the beak back along the bottom portion of the face. Do not fill in the entire area. The color should be no more concentrated or heavy near the beak fading out to white towards the back of the face.
  12. Reinforce the previous color with SC-5 Tigar Tail using CB-404 Pointed Round. Along the back of the wing paint in some lines that have a sweeping circular motion over the middle of the wing usng CB-110 Liner. Reinforce the shading again using thinned SC-25 Crackerjack Brown and then SC-81 Cinnamon Stix. Outline the back of the neck and wing with thinned SC-14 Java Bean and SC-81 Cinnamon Stix.
  13. To the upper portions of the chest and down along the area next to the wing of the bird, apply SC-30 Blue Dawn using CB-404 Pointed Round.
  14. Apply some color below the branch near the feet. Exclude a portion of the area around the feet and below the branch.
  15. Darken the areas next to the wings and from the face area with SC-31 The Blues. Agian reinforce the color and darken with SC-76 Cara-bein Blue to start building the shape of the breast plates. Shade the areas on the upper breast to form two shapes. Darken these beast plate areas with SC-12 Moody Blue. Detail the areas along the breast and face with SC-12 Moody Blue using CB-110 Liner. Deepen the shading along the edge of the breast from the face down to the branch as well.
  16. To the lower wing area, shade with SC-31 The Blues with CB-110 Liner. Darken and delineate the wing feathers with SC-90 Elephant Ears. Reinforce the gray areas with thinned SC-15 Tuxedo. Accent the back portions of the wing feathers with pure SC-15 Tuxedo.
  17. The lower tail featehrs and derriere are SC-31 The Blues. Paint in some lines of SC-90 Elephant ears using CB-110 Liner over the blue area. Using thinned SC-15 Tuxedo, darken and form the separations of the tail using CB-110 Liner. Accent the tail with some pure SC-15 Tuxedo.
  18. Thin some SC-90 Elephant Ears and paint in the branch of the tree. Using thinned SC-14 Java Bean, detail the branch. Reinforce the bottom edge of the branch with another coat of thined SC-14.
  19. Paint in the feet with SC-51 Poo Bear using CB-110 Liner. Detail the feet with thinned SC-25 Crackerjack Brown. Detail the lower portions of the feet with some thinned SC-14 Java Bean. Paint in the claws of the feet with thinned SC-15 Tuxedo and accent with pure SC-15.
  20. To paint in the flowers on the tree, load CB-106 Script Liner with water and tip with SC-95 Pinky Swear. Apply the color next to the calyx and it should fade out to nothing. Paint in some thinned SC-88 Tu Tu Tango in stipes to the flowers. Thin some SC-73 Candy Apple Red and detail the lines of the flowers using CB-110 Liner.
  21. To paint in the dried out calyxes use thinned SC-25 Crackerjack Brown and apply to the inner portions of the calyx. To the tops of the calyxes apply one thin coat of SC-14 Java Bean. Outline the cap and paint in the stems using the thinned SC-14 with CB-110 Liner.
  22. Using CB-106 Script Liner loaded with thinned SC-79 It's Sage, paint in the leaves. Apply a thin coat of SC-52 Toad-ily Green over some of the leaves. Rinse the bruch and load with water and tip with SC-25 Crackerjack Brown to shade some of the leaves next ot the top portions where they would attach to the branch.
  23. To the bottle trim, side, neck, and inside of the vase where it shows, apply 3 coats of EL-124 Stormy Blue using CB-106 Script Liner and CB-604 Soft Fan. Be careful when applying the color as it comes down from the neck. This color can flow down over the neck.
  24. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 05. Firing the peice to shelf cone 05 has two benefits: It will make the matte glaze more matte in apparance and will give the Stormy Blue a silvery metallic look than if fired to shelf cone 06.
