Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 Bisque. Moisten a clean Sponge and wipe Bisque to remove any dust.  Do not use excess amounts of water to wipe down the ware. Masking tape will not adhere to the ware if overly wet from sponging.
  2. Use the ½" Masking tape to section off the inner background area. The placement of the tape edge should be at the outer crease extending over to where the flare starts. This should partition off the inner flat area of the plate. Check the tape to ensure that the edges are securely adhered to the ware.
  3. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 Coats of FN-001 White to the center of the plate. While the tape is there for masking the area, over-extending the color onto the tape is unnecessary. When the last coat of color has started to dry, remove the tape from the plate.
  4. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 Coats of FN-009 Black to the border and back of the plate.
  5. Transfer the design to the ware using AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper. The basic flower, stems and leaves is all that is needed at this time.
  6. To the flower and bud apply 1 coat of SC-3 Wine About It using a  CB-404 #4  or a CB-406 #6 Pointed Round. To the stems apply 2 Coats of SC-15 Tuxedo. To the leaves marked "A" apply 2 Coats of SC-10 Teal Next Time using CB-404 #4 Pointed Round. Using the same brush, apply 2 Coats of SC-63 Popeye’s Favorite to the leaves marked "B".
  7. Retrace or freehand the flower separations and center vein in the leaves. Condition a CB-110 #10/0 Liner with AC-525 Brush Cleaner. Apply one good coat of AC-302 Wax Resist to the Separation lines in the flower pattern and to the center vein in the leaves. Wash brush immediately after use in warm water and AC-525 Brush Cleaner. Allow to dry.
  8. To the flower, stems and leaves apply 2 Coats of SG-202 White Cobblestone. The second coat is applied shortly after the wet look has passed on the first application of the Cobblestone Glaze. Try not to over extend the Cobblestone Glaze out past the underlying colors. The Glaze color can start to craze as it dries. Some attention to the speed of applying the color is necessary to ensure that over-drying of the Glaze does not occur before applying the second coat of Glaze. The thickness of the application of the Glaze Coats will determine the breakup pattern in the fired color. Thinner applications will produce a finer web of crackle while heavier applications of Glaze will give a wider webbing to the crackle.
  9. On a glazed tile, place out some of the following colors: SC-14 Java Bean, SC-25 Crackerjack Brown, SC-34 Down to Earth, SC-39 Army Surplus, and SC-52 Toad-ily Green. When the Cobblestone Glaze has lost its shine, apply 1 coat of SC-14 Java Bean to the stems, shade with a bit of SC-25 Crackerjack Brown using a CB-404 #4 Pointed Round. Using the same brush, apply to the leaves marked "A" 1 coat of SC-39 Army Surplus shaded with a small amount of SC-14 Java Bean. To the leaves marked "B" apply SC-52 Toad-ily Green shaded with SC-25 Crackerjack and SC-39 Army Surplus. The shading on the leaves is always next to the flower and overlapping leaves.
  10. To the Tuxedo border of the plate, place the masking tape centered between the rim of the plate. This should create approximately 3 equal sections. Apply 2-3 Coats of SG-202 White Cobblestone to the border using CB-604 #4  Soft Fan. Apply the second and third coat immediately after the shine has left the previous coat. Try not to get excess Glaze onto the background field of the plate nor any large amounts on the taped area. When the last coat of Glaze has been applied and lost its shinny look, but still damp, remove the masking tape from the border.
  11. * Optional Step. Condition CB-604 #4Soft Fan with AC-525 Brush Cleaner before applying the wax. For transporting of the plate, it may be necessary to apply 1 coat of AC-302 Wax Resist over the Cobblestone Glaze areas. Wash brush immediately after use in warm water and AC-525 Brush Cleaner. Let the AC-302 Wax Resist dry.
  12. Stilt and fire piece to shelf cone 06. Vent the Kiln during the early stages of the fire to aid in the burning off of the wax on the piece.
