1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque.  Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
2. Find the center of the top of the bottle cap. The center is about 5¼ ” from the curved portion of the piece. Check the center of this by using a ruler from two different directional points to find the center of the top. Drill a ¼” hole in the center of the bottle cap using a Dremel Tool or a drill with a masonry bit. Be careful not to crack the piece by being too aggressive with the drilling.
3. Transfer the circle portion of the pattern to the piece. The placement of the circle is approximately ¾” from the curved portion of the edge. Again check the centering of the circle in relation to the hole in the piece. The lettering and quarter markings are not needed at this time.
4. On to a tile, place out some of the following colors; SC-35 Gray Hare, SC-60 Silver Lining and SC-90 Elephant Ears. Moisten a Sea Wool Sponge and veil the three colors to the bottle cap from the circles edge to the back of the piece. Apply 2 coats of the colors in a mottled collage of color. Note: A Sea Wool Sponge will give you a more mottled look than using a synthetic sponge.  Allow to dry.
5. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 3 coats of SC-4 Salsa to the inner circle portion of the pattern.  Allow to dry.
6. Onto a tile place SC-14 Java Bean, SC-25 Crackerjack Brown and SC-34 Down to Earth. Using a moistened Silk Decorating Sponge to veil on the colors over the piece to create a weathered rust like appearance. Note: A Silk Decorating Sponge will give you a fine almost pin point veiling than a synthetic sponge would. Start with the darkest color to lightest. Keep the colors light and airy. Apply some SC-87 Ruby Slippers in the same manner over the “rusted” areas on the red circle of the pattern.
7. With a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper, transfer the pattern of the lettering and directional points onto the face of the clock.
8. Using a CB-406 #6Pointed Round, apply 2-3 coats of SC-86 Old Lace to the lettering.
9. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, apply 1-2 coats of SC-15 Tuxedo to the outline of the painted lettering and to the directional points.  Allow to dry.
10. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing to the entire piece. Allow to dry.
11. Stilt and fire the piece to shelf cone 06/05.
12. Install the clock works into the clock following the manufacturer’s instructions.
