Instructions

  1. Begin with properly fired shelf cone 04 bisque. Moisten a clean sponge and wipe bisque to remove any dust.
  2. Using a pencil and AC-230 Clay Carbon Paper, trace the pattern of the three birds on to the ware. Trace only the basic shapes of the birds.
  3. Using scissors cut out the three shapes on the pattern to create the stencils for the birds without any jagged edges.
  4. Place some of the following colors onto a tile: UG-19 Electra Blue, UG-34 Chestnut Brown, UG-58 Harvest Gold, UG-91 True Teal and UG-100 Terra Cotta.
  5. Moisten a Silk Sponge with water and wring out the excess water into a paper towel.
  6. Place the large bird stencil over the pattern on the ware. Pinch the sponge to form s pillow. Load the leading edge of the sponge with UG-58 Harvest Gold. Test and blend the color on the tile by stippling the sponge. Stipple 1 coat of the color from the tail up and around to the neck of the bird. The color should be darkest near the edge of the stencil and fade as moves toward the belly. Do not place any color over the other bird areas. Allow to dry. Reload the sponge again with UG-58 and then tip the sponge with UG-100 Terra Cotta. Blend the sponge on a tile. Stipple more color over the first and blend the brown color over the previous one. Pick up some UG-34 Chestnut Brown and stipple this color to the beak and neck areas. The color should be lightest near the tail and darkest around the beak and neck. Rinse sponge and remove excess water again. Pick up some UG-19 Electra Blue and tip with UG-91 True Teal. Blend the color on the tile but not overly so to where both individual colors cannot be distinguished. Veil the colors towards the lower back near the tail and belly of the birds. Keep these two colors light to
  7. Repeat the previous step to complete the baby birds using the same colors and shading.
  8. Sketch or re-trace in the detail of the wing, top and tail feathers, eyes, mouth and feet to the birds.
  9. Load a CB-110 #10/0 Liner with UG-19 Electra Blue and side tip with UG-91 True Teal. Starting at the end of the tail and top feathers using a “pressure-point” stroke to paint in the feathers.
  10. Using a CB-110 #10/0 Liner, detail the wing feather, dots in top and tail feathers, mouth, eyes and feet with UG-50 Jet Black.
  11. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats S-2714 Herb Garden with crystals to the ground area and overlap the feet slightly.
  12. Using a CB-604 #4 Soft Fan, apply 2 coats of S-2101 Crystal Clear Brushing glaze to the remainder of the canvas slightly over lapping the crystal glaze. Allow to dry.
  13. Stilt and fire the piece to shelf cone 05/06.
