Buckeye Ceramic Supply just finished the first class in their Teacher Summer Workshop Series! They kicked off with hand-building clay canvases and then sculpting a still life on top. The teachers enjoyed incorporating ceramics, drawing and painting in ONE lesson. An actual still-life was set up in the middle of the classroom. Each teacher had a unique perspective of the still-life. Based on their vantage point, the teachers were instructed to build a relief of shapes on top of the clay canvas.
Some areas of the still-life remained flat, while other areas just jumped out at you!
A few teachers took this lesson to the next level and applied the Sgraffito technique to their 3-D still-life. Sgraffito is an awesome way to remind students to always include texture! Try it in your classroom with Mayco’s Stroke & Coat glazes, suitable for firing on green-ware. Simply apply 2 even coats of any Stroke & Coat glaze on the top of leather-hard clay. Allow the glaze to dry until it becomes matte and not shiny. Then, use a small wire loop tool to carve away parts of the glaze to reveal the clay below: Sgraffito! "Sgraffito" is derived from the Italian word "graffiare", which means "to scratch".
