Product Spotlight - About Foundations

Foundations

This Product Spotlight features Mayco’s Foundations glazes - the newest addition to the Mayco glaze assortment. These non-toxic, food safe glazes are a derivative of the Series 2000 product family, which has been merged into the Foundations brand. These glazes have been reformulated to enhance performance and ease of use. Foundations can be used as a stand-alone glaze or combined with Stroke & Coats®, Crystalites™ and Jungle Gems™ glazes for interesting designs. The Foundations line includes a wide variety of colors with opaque, translucent and matte finishes. Beginning or advanced artists will complete any fired ceramic design with confidence.

Foundations Opaque glazes apply smoothly without showing brush strokes, are stiffer and will not move like other glazes, making base coating an easy process. As a base glaze, they provide an excellent "foundation" for decorative brushwork using Stroke & Coat® glazes as in a majolica technique. Foundations can be layered, butted against other glazes, keeping colors crisp and pure. Foundations can also be intermixed for color customization.

The translucency of the new Foundation Sheers displays the most intricate of designs (we recommend Mayco’s Underglazes or Stroke and Coats® for your design work). Foundations Mattes have a satin surface glaze that will hold a design without movement and are perfect for full coverage.

The Foundations color assortment has 40 opaque colors, 21 Sheers and 6 Matte glazes, including many of your favorites from the Series 2000 line. Value priced at one low economical price, you will find the Foundations are very cost efficient for the classroom. A one or two ounce portion will provide opaque coverage on an 11" surface. Using Foundations will eliminate the need for a clear glaze, saving precious time and budget dollars. But, if desired, Foundations are compatible with clear glaze for co-firing.

While formulated to mature at cone 05/06, many of the Foundations colors perform beautifully at higher firing temperatures. Each individual color’s performance at cone 6 is noted on the product label and can also be found on our website at www.maycocolors.com.
