Crystal Glazes (Crystalites and Jungle Gems) provide a fun way to add extra interest to your fired projects. Use them directly from the jar in the decoration style we call “Art in a Jar”, layered with other Crystal glazes, as a design element or as an accent in your overall design of Stroke & Coat or Foundations glazes.
Our Sea Life Bisque collection provides a simple surface on which you can add these blooming glazes. Note: When using a Crystal glaze on an item such as a mug, we recommend that you apply the glaze to the handle only due to the surface texture that these beauties create.
A few tips to get you started:
• Apply to cone 04 bisque and fire to cone 06/05
• For overall coverage, apply with a soft fan brush, allowing the glaze to dry in between coats
• Avoid placing crystals towards the bottom of ware to keep them from flowing onto the kiln shelf during firing.
• Stir frequently as crystals tend to settle in the jar due to their weight.
• Store upside down with the lid on securely to allow easy mixing and even dispersion of crystals.
• During your final coat, you may wish to move the crystals around with your brush. Where you see the crystal is where you will see it bloom.

Crystal Glazes are also available in our Stoneware Glaze line! Add texture and interest to your glaze combinations to create unique looks for your stoneware projects. Since the Crystals bloom during firing, apply Crystal Glazes to the top two-thirds of the piece. Jungle Gems and Crystalites glazes, which are designed to mature at cone 06/05, can also be fired to cone 6 and used on Stoneware.
Jungle Gems and Crystalites will flow more when fired to higher temperatures. Be sure to limit the amount of crystals on the bottom third of a vertical piece. In addition, always check the label on the jar or the Mid-Range Firing Guide in the printed Color Guide to see how the colors change at the higher temperature. Experiment with different color combinations!
