The iconic Sock Monkey from the early 20th century is back! This folk art toy is appearing in everything from clothing and slippers, to kitchenware, backpacks, stickers, magnets, greeting cards and fabrics for crafting or quilting!

Originally and still intended as a work sock, the Original Rockford Red Heel® sock created by Nelson Knitting was turned into sock monkeys by women and mothers of the early 1900’s. Still a favorite part of Americana, the instructions for making these monkeys is still included in each pair of socks. Throughout the years the popularity of the sock monkey has grown to include new stuffed animals being created including elephants and rabbits.

 

The Sock Monkey has also made appearances in popular culture including in the movies “Cabin Boy,” and “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium,” television shows “How I Met Your Mother” and “Fairly Odd Parents,” as well as in numerous books, comic books, ad campaigns and photographs.

The Sock Monkey is so popular that it even has it’s own festival. The 7th Annual Sock Monkey Madness Festival will be held March 5-6, 2011 in Rockford, Illinois and will not only celebrate this folk art’s heritage and Rockford’s knitting industry, but will host a sock monkey international film festival.
